Minsk and Moscow comment on the forced landing of the plane
"The actions of the competent structures (...) were legal," claims the Belarusian Foreign Ministry after the forced emergency landing of the Ryanair plane in Minsk. In turn, Moscow is "appalled" by the reaction of Western states to Sunday events.

A Ryanair plane flying from Athens to Vilnius was forced to make an emergency landing in Minsk on Sunday afternoon. The reason was supposed to be a bomb threat. Before the forced landing, the plane was escorted by a MiG-29 fighter. On board the cruise flight there were, among others Raman Pratasiewicz (a well-known Belarusian oppositionist) who was detained after the landing. Only after several dozen minutes the flight FR4978 was resumed, the Ryainair plane landed in Vilnius late in the evening.

- There is no doubt that the actions of our competent structures were fully compliant with the established international standards - said the spokesman of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry Anatol Hłaz on Monday. The official assured that "the Belarusian side is always responsible for compliance with aviation law standards, which is confirmed by aviation regulators".

- I am convinced that in this situation we are able to guarantee full transparency, if necessary - accept experts and present all materials in order to exclude any innuendo - added Hłaz. The Belarusian Foreign Ministry accuses European countries of "militant statements" that "exacerbate and politicize the whole situation."

The reason was rumors that the computer scientist Edward Snowden, who revealed the scale of electronic surveillance conducted by the US National Security Agency, may be on board. "Therefore, the analogous behavior of other countries should not be shocking" - adds Zakharov in the entry. The statement by Russian diplomacy was later softened by a Kremlin spokesman. "Russia does not want to condemn or support anyone over the incident with a Ryanair plane forced to land in Minsk on Sunday," said Dmitry Peskov.

The official added that "international aviation authorities should make some kind of assessment of compliance or non-compliance with international standards" in connection with Sunday's forced landing. When asked whether it was true that there were Russian agents on board the aircraft, Peskov replied that he would not like to comment on it and assured that the Kremlin "has no data on who was there and who was not".
